Reporting to: Head of Finance

The Role

The post holder will be responsible for the management accounting, reporting and planning / budgeting of the contracts within their portfolio, leading and developing a team of up to 3 finance managers. The role will involve developing excellent working relationships with the operations team across the Service Line and supporting the Head of Finance and the Heads of Service in the financial and commercial aspects of the performance of the relevant contracts. This role is potential succession planning for the Head of Finance.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Be responsible for a team of 1-2 direct reports. Coach and develop the finance managers to achieve and deliver the highest possible standards and maintain strong working relationships with the business.
  • Actively manage the forward looking assessment of key risks & opportunities that will affect future financial performance through a deep understanding of the commercial operations and financial drivers, and through general interaction with operators.
  • Work closely with the Head of Service and Regional Managers to drive enhanced business performance and decision making. Provide specialist financial support and advice to other Service Line support functions.
  • Maintain robust, independent control with regular balance sheet reviews and reconciliations for review.
  • Be responsible for understanding key commercial terms within core contracts and subcontracts. Negotiate with local commissioners, suppliers and subcontractors to ensure PPG’s interests are maximised.
  • Ensure all sales invoices are raised for all contracts and incremental services in a timely manner.
  • Ensure the service line complies with Group purchasing processes.
  • Be responsible for ensuring a smooth internal month end and year end close, including managing the audit compliance for the relevant contracts. Ensure that reported results are robust, including completing written commentaries for the Head of Finance.
  • Working with the divisional FP&A Manager to complete the annual plan and regular forecast process for the operating units.
  • Assist in the financial appraisal of new business opportunities, including providing benchmarking information against existing services. Contribute to preparing necessary models / briefing papers and board approval submissions where required.
  • Support Strategic Projects on an ad hoc basis.
  • Be responsible for working closely with group shared services on maintaining accurate and efficient transactional processing across AR, AP and payroll teams. Work with central finance colleagues to ensure Corporation Tax and VAT compliance. Improve robustness of processes and procedures.
  • Support the AR team in the timely collection of cash, helping to resolve any blockages by establishing working relationships with PPG’s local customers. Ensure that any known delays to cash collections are fed into PPG’s cash forecasts via the FP&A manager.
  • Some travel / on-site support will be a required element of the job.

Key Skills 

  • A qualified accountant, at least 5 years PQE, ideally with a strong commercial background.
  • Experience of working within a large, complex and multi-site organisations
  • Previous experience of line management. Able to demonstrate leadership qualities.
  • Requires a keen eye for detail, whilst also understanding the context and the bigger picture. Instinctively able to identify when something does not look right.
  • Able to appreciate the diversity and complexity of the business and the different environments and business models through which PPG operates.
  • Sensitive to understanding the demands placed on the organisation which works extensively with public sector bodies.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to supportively challenge, contribute to debate internally as well as represent the organisation with external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate high integrity and work in an open, transparent and supportive manner to develop strong working relationships.
  • Prior experience of working within a private equity backed business and appreciating the associated demands of the finance function would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Prior experience in organisations involved in large, complex, multi-site outsourcing arrangement would be an advantage.

 

Location

The base for this role would be Bristol, with occasional visits to the other offices and the option for some remote working.
